Meet Martin

Martin Cousineau has spent a lifetime serving the people of Genesee County—as a healthcare professional, community leader, public servant, husband, father, and grandfather.

Born in Flint, Michigan, in 1953, Martin was raised in Clio alongside his five younger brothers. He graduated from Clio High School in 1971 before attending Michigan State University, where he completed his undergraduate studies in preparation for chiropractic school. Martin went on to earn his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in December 1976.

Since 1977, Martin has proudly served the Clio area as a chiropractor, helping generations of local families improve their health and well-being. Through nearly five decades of practice, he has built strong relationships throughout the community and gained a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing working families.

In 1987, Martin married Janet Knickerbocker. Together they have raised two sons and built a family rooted in service and hard work. Their son Eric lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he works as a freelance photographer and is the proud father of Martin’s grandsons, Milo and Hunter. Their son Tyler serves our nation as a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army and, together with his wife Claudia, have two children.

Martin’s commitment to public service began with local leadership roles, serving as Vice Chairperson of the Clio Downtown Development Authority from 2008 to 2013 and as a member of Thetford Township government from 2011 to 2015. In 2016, he was elected to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, where he served through 2020 and was reelected in 2022 to continue serving today.

During his time on the Board of Commissioners, Martin has served as County Chair, Public Works Chair, and Finance Chair. He is especially proud of his work on the Finance Committee, where he has helped guide Genesee County from a position near financial crisis to one of long-term fiscal stability and responsible growth.

Martin believes effective leadership requires experience, accountability, and a willingness to put people ahead of politics. Throughout his career, he has listened to and learned from tens of thousands of residents. He has found that most people share the same fundamental goals: the opportunity to earn a good living, a safe and affordable home in which to raise a family, and financial security in retirement.

These priorities guide every decision he makes.

As a candidate for the Michigan Senate, Martin is committed to bringing practical experience, fiscal responsibility, and common-sense leadership to Lansing. His focus is not on partisan politics, but on delivering real results that strengthen families, support local businesses, and create opportunities for future generations.

For more than a decade in public office—and throughout his professional career—Martin has been driven by a simple belief: when a community has been good to you and your family, it is your duty to give back.

That commitment continues today.

A Proven Leader. A True Neighbor. Your Voice.

A Bold Vision. Real Solutions

Proven Leadership That Delivers Results

As a four-time Genesee County commissioner, Martin Cousineau has a proven record of serving the community, solving problems, and bringing people together. His experience means he is ready on day one to advocate for the families, workers, and businesses of our district.

Responsible Stewardship of Taxpayer Dollars

Families have to live within a budget, and government should too. Martin believes in fiscal responsibility, prioritizing essential services, reducing wasteful spending, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are invested wisely to strengthen our communities.

Transparency, Integrity, and Accountability

Public service is about earning trust. Martin is committed to open communication, honest leadership, and making government more accountable to the people it serves. Residents deserve leaders who listen, communicate clearly, and always put the public first.

Strong Communities, Strong Families

Healthy communities begin with strong families. Martin will champion policies that support public safety, quality schools, local businesses, and opportunities for future generations, ensuring our neighborhoods remain great places to live, work, and raise a family.
